Hidayat Heydarov won Azerbaijan's first gold medal at Paris-2024

The Azerbaijani Olympic team won its first gold medal at the Paris-2024 Summer Olympics.

 

This success was achieved by our world and European champion Hidayat Heydarov (-73 kg), who took over tatami on the third day of judo competitions. The first opponent of our judoka, who started the competition from the 1/8 final stage, was Israeli Tohar Bitbul, bronze medalist of the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics. Having finished the match with a victory, our representative reached the 1/4 final. In the next stages, the leader of our judo team won against Canadian Artur Margelidon and Kosovar Akil Gyakov and reached the final. 

 

At the decisive stage, our judoka's opponent was John Benjamin coarse from France. Having won against his opponent in the intense fight, Hidayat Heydarov won the gold medal at the Paris-2024 Summer Olympics. 

 

This was Azerbaijan's 50th medal at the Olympic Games after gaining independence. The Azerbaijani team won 49 (7 gold, 14 silver and 28 bronze) medals in various sports at these games.

 

Judo competitions were also watched by Vice-President of the National Olympic Committee Chingiz Huseynzade, Minister of Youth and Sports Farid Gayibov, Secretary General of NOC Azer Aliyev and Deputy Minister Mariana Vasileva.

 

Four more athletes of the Azerbaijani team will take on tatami at the Paris-2 judo competitions, which will last until August 2024.
