Azerbaijan's public-political and sports figure, professor, honored scientist, president of the Azerbaijan National Olympic Academy, Honorary Secretary General of the Azerbaijan National Olympic Committee Agajan Abiyev was awarded the “Olympic Laurel” award of the European Olympic Committee.
The specialist with “Shohret” and “Sharaf” orders was awarded this award at the 54th General Assembly of the European Olympic Committees in Frankfurt, Germany. At the General Assembly, the award was presented to the secretary general of the National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan Azer Aliyev.
Agajan Gulam Oglu Abiyev was born in 1937, November 24 in Bulbula settlement of Baku.
Agajan Abiyev's name is written in gold letters in the boxing history of our country and went down in history as the longest-lived rector of the Azerbaijan State Academy of Physical Culture and Sports (1987-2015) (28 years).
He has achieved great success in both science and sports. In 2005, 2010 and 2015, he was elected a deputy of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Science and education, and a chairman of the Disciplinary Commission. From 1984 to 2009, Agajan Abiyev, president and then I vice-president of the Boxing Federation of Azerbaijan (2009-2022), also secretary general of the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan (NOC) (1997-2021), member of the Executive Committee and Technical Commission of the European Olympic Committee (1998-2006), vice-president of the European Amateur Boxing Association (EIBA) (2002-2012), member of the Executive Committee 2002-2012). Since 1998, he has been president of the Azerbaijan National Olympic Academy. He is an honorary Master of sports of the USSR, an international judge. Agajan Abiyev was awarded the honorary title of "Honored Worker of Physical Culture and Sports" of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 1991, the “Shohret” order in 2001, the honorary title of "honored scientist" of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2007, the order of merit to the motherland in 2012, the order of merit to the motherland in 2022, the order of merit to the motherland in 1st degree, and the “Sharaf” order in 2017. Agajan Abiyev was also awarded the "Olympic" and "Sharaf Nishani" orders of the National Olympic Committee.
He was the chief boxing referee at the Athens 2004 Summer Olympics and a member of the International Boxing jury at the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics. He is the six-time boxing champion of Azerbaijan (1958, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964). Agajan Abiyev was an all-union boxing referee (1978), a judge of the European Amateur Boxing Association (1982), a judge of the World Boxing Association (1986), a chairman of the EABA refereeing commission, a member of the executive committee of AIBA (2002-2012).
Mr.Agajan has great merits in the field of science. He is the author of more than 100 scientific articles, monographs, teaching aids, inventions, one of the first creators of the electronic refereeing system. Agajan Abiyev, known in many countries of the world for his achievements in the field of sports, played an important role in the popularization and development of Sports and the Olympic movement in Azerbaijan. He is a full member of the International Academy of Sciences.
